Adult social day care provides social activities, meals, recreation, and some health-related services. These facilities focus on enriching lives through engaging in a social community and activities that build upon each individual’s skills, knowledge, and unique abilities.

Daily activities include things like creative expression through arts and crafts, musical entertainment and group sing-a-longs, mental stimulation games like bingo, stretching and gentle exercises like chair yoga, discussion groups about books, films, or current events, holiday and birthday celebrations, local outings, and nutritious meals and snacks.

Social day care differs from adult day health care, which offers more intensive health, therapeutic, and social services for individuals with serious medical conditions at risk of needing full-time nursing home care.

Social daycare is offered in many different locations and settings. Many are in a facility dedicated solely for the purpose of social daycare, though especially in more rural areas, social daycare programs may be housed in repurposed medical buildings, schools, or retail shops. Some are even conducted in active churches if space and accommodations allow.

Depending on state requirements, a registered nurse may not be present in adult social day care because medication management or other medical therapies are generally not provided. Again, this depends on state regulations. Social daycare is frequently run by a variety of social workers, therapists (such as art and music), counselors, dietitians, aides, students, and volunteers. Occasionally, medical assistants, nursing students, or other local healthcare professionals will come in for health support services such as blood pressure monitoring and vision screening.

In addition to the above activities, individuals in social daycare may also receive services such as enhancement of daily living skills (ADLs), personal care (such as salon day for hair and nails), and transportation to and from the facility. Caregivers may also receive assistance through counseling and support groups.

If interested in social daycare, please consult with the Care Manager.
