This one-time visit occurs when someone initially signs up for Medicare/Medicare Advantage. This preventive visit must be scheduled within the first 12 months of having Medicare Part B (the medical insurance part).
What it is
This visit includes a health-related medical and social history review. It also includes education and counseling about preventive services, including these:
Certain screenings, flu and pneumonia shots, and referrals for other care, if needed.
Height, weight, and blood pressure measurements.
A calculation of body mass index (BMI).
A simple vision test.
A review of potential risk for depression and level of safety at home.
An offer to talk about creating advance directives.
A written plan is needed for screenings, shots, and other preventive services.
Things to know
When making the appointment, let the provider know it is for the “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit and bring the following to the appointment:
Available medical records, including immunization records.
Family health history.
A list of any prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements currently being taken, how often they're taken, and why.
If the provider performs additional tests or services during the same visit that Medicare doesn't cover under this preventive benefit, your loved one may have to pay coinsurance and the Part B deductible may apply. If Medicare doesn't cover the additional tests or services (like a routine physical exam), your loved one may have to pay the full amount.
